Today in reading we are beginning to read new books! These books have a main theme about differences. (This correlates very well with our Celebrating Differences unit). With reading partners, each student will read a book about a difference that a main character has. The difference is based on a disability that the character has. Students will learn how the character may have a physical or mental difference, but overall they are still human beings and have many things in common with ourselves! Once students are finished reading their book, they will present their character’s difference to the rest of the class and discuss the main theme of their book. The presentations will be next Monday. Homework is the usual reading and to finish up on the flip books for Thursday (for January book projects).
In writing we are working on “showing and not telling” in our narrative stories. We will learn how to use the five senses chart to explain how we feel instead of just saying “I feel scared” or “I feel happy…” and so on. We will be using this strategy when we begin our new narrative prompt on Wednesday. Homework is the spelling homework for the week.
In math we continued practicing multiplying a two digit by a one digit number using two methods: the traditional algorithm and the array method. Homework is the usual sheets minus the orange math facts sheet. They haven’t come back from the printer yet.
In social studies we will begin learning about the Lewis and Clark expedition. Then we will use a timeline to see when historical events occurred, such as when the Lewis and Clark journey began, when the first sea explorers set sail, when Washington became a state, and so on.
We will also continue learning about different kinds of prejudice. Today we will focus on racial, national, and religious.
