Today in reading we are working with our novels. We are starting to fill out our study question sheets, which means we are getting close to discussion groups. We love to talk about what we read. It gives us a chance to clarify parts in the book and summarize what we comprehended from the text.
Also keep reading and keep track of your hours at home for Cat in the Hat!
Today in writing we are revising our rough drafts. This gives us the opportunity to change any ideas in our writing to make sure the content makes sense. We can also change our organization, add more descriptive words, etc. This past week we have been working on showing and not telling, similies and metaphors, and great conclusions. When we are finished revising our own writing, we will work in partners and take turns reading our stories to a friend. This allows questions to be answered if needed to clarify any confusing ideas in the story. Our spelling test is today as well.
In math we are continuing our unit on measurement. We are going to use rulers and yardsticks to measure objects around the classroom. The ultimate goal of the day is for students to explore and recognize that an inch is the smallest, a foot is in the middle, and the yard is the longest (we will talk about miles, but mainly use inches, feet, and yards). It is important for us to know this foundational information because we can use this to help us convert measurements from feet to yards, from yards to feet, from inches to feet, and so on. Our overall goal of this unit to measurement conversions, so we are working our way to that!
Don’t forget math homework, because tomorrow we have a math test!
In science today we are going to work with static electricity! This is always fun because students can actually see and sometimes feel the static electricity! We will be using balloons to investigate this phenomenon.
In social studies we have our early explorers unit test! Studying will definitely pay off when we take this test!
After social studies, we will also get to make Valentine’s Day holders. Each student has taken a list home of everyone’s name in our class. Don’t feel the need to go buy expensive Valentine’s Day cards. You can also easily make them! You don’t have to bring cards, but the rule is: if you make 1 person a card, you have to make everyone in the whole class a card. Our Valentine’s Day party is Thursday, February 11th so all cards, if you choose to do them, are due that day. However, if you can bring them by Wednesday, the 10th, then we can give them to Nick before his surgery. Parents are welcome at parties. It is fun to see what the students have planned. Our party this time is from 2:20-3:00pm.
Just a reminder: If you choose to do book orders, they are due next Tuesday, February 9th!
