Our immigrant unit begins today!

In reading today we are continuing our novel work. We have one last book discussion tomorrow, so everyone will be ready to continue reading the middle part of their book. Also, it’s great to see all of the reading logs signed! We are keeping track of our reading hours for our Cat in the Hat Read Across America.

In writing we are finishing our narrative stories and making a final copy! Our narratives are due on Thursday. I am so excited to read what everyone has written!  Don’t forget spelling homework tonight!

Today in math we continued converting lengths in customary units. We used a common problem such as converting TV inches to feet. This allowed us to see how these conversions can have remainders. The most important thing when converting is to remember big to small, multiply and small to big we divide. Ask your child about this. We will take our math homework test on Thursday this week since there is no school on Friday.  So, we are doing two rows on our pink sheet tonight to be ready on Thursday for the test.  The rest of the homework is the same.  All is due on Thursday.

Today in social studies we are starting chapter 10 on immigrants. We will learn about Caucasians, African Americans, Native Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, and Hispanics. This relates very well with the Celebrating Differences unit.  First, we will see what we know about immigrants. Then we will learn about ourselves before we learn about others. In the next few days we will talk about our own personal identity and cultures and how this relates to diversity in our class, state, and nation.

For social studies homework I will be sending home a family tree for you to complete with your child. This is due on Thursday, Feb. 11th. There is a directions sheet and family tree attached. Ultimately, we want to know where your ancestors came from. It is thought that everyone has been an immigrant before. We can tie race into this idea because those who are a common race, come from a common origin (place of birth). It will be interesting to see where all of our ancestors have came from. Please fill out the tree using both sides of the family; mom, dad, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles. We want to know the name, birthdate, and most importantly the origin (state or country). If you run out of room, you may use the back of the tree. Also, if you are unsure about the answer, you can skip it or research it. This assignment is due on Thursday, so you have time to complete the family tree!

In science we are continuing our unit on circuits. We get to build our own circuits today. The circuits we are building will be series circuits so we get to see how to use one battery to light two bulbs. This will create a large circle, or circuit called a series circuit (2 lights share the same electricity pathway).

Also, don’t forget book orders are due tomorrow!!!

Students should be studying their part for our celebrating differences program.  Your child should have a yellow slip officially letting you know about this performance.  Please sign the form so that we know you know about it!  Thanks.
