In reading, we are beginning the middle sections of our books. We are keeping track of our thinking by answering questions about our book, completing our great thinker’s charts, and finding 2 unfamiliar vocabulary words to define. You should already be so proud of our Cat in the Hat reading. We have 9 stripes on our hat and our goal is 15! Each stripe is worth 5 hours, so we have read 45 hours already!
In writing, we are going to practice our spelling words because tomorrow we have our spelling test! Also, we are finishing up our narrative stories. Today is the last day to make a final copy of your story! Tomorrow we will get to share what we wrote! This is so rewarding!
In math, we have a homework test tomorrow, so don’t forget to do your homework tonight! In class today, we are continuing measurement conversions. We will talk about customary and metric measurements. We will also add story problems into our activities for a challenge. Add the end of our measurement unit, we will ultimately be able to complete measurement conversions that are given from story problems. We are almost there! All math homework should be finished tonight. Test tomorrow!
We have computers today, so we will continue working on our electricity powerpoints. They will be due soon!
In social studies we are going to review our personal identities and culture so we can write a paragraph on why our identities are so important to us. This relates to social studies because we must know about ourselves first, before we learn about others. Once we write our paragraph with three details as to why our identity and culture is important to us, we will review what we know about immigrants. We will take notes about the five types of immigrants (Caucasians, African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, and Asian or Pacific Islanders) and why they move to Washington. Geographical features in Washington influence the move of immigrants to come to our state. Many people come to Washington to work and live because of the land features we have (farming, industrial jobs, shipbuilding, fur trading, mining, etc.). We will also begin learning where immigrants come from, which relates to the family tree assignment that we are doing. Don’t forget the family tree is due TOMORROW! We will need if for our activity on origins of immigrants.
In science, we a going to build parallel circuits. Last time we experimented with series circuits where there is only 1 pathway for electricity to flow. We noticed that one battery with two lights made our lights dim because they shared the electricity. We also noticed when we had 2 batteries and 2 lights, the lights were bright again. Today our challenge is to use only 1 battery and 2 bulbs to make a bright light. The answer to this is to make a parallel circuit. This is when there are 2 or more pathways of electricity so the lights do not have to share. Therefore; the lights will be bright even with 1 battery! Very cool!
Don’t forget to bring a signed Celebrating Differences form tomorrow and to keep practicing!
